This award celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of world language education and cultural advocacy.
Originally established in 1987 as the ACTFL Edwin Cudecki Award, it was named in honor of the Director of Foreign Languages for Chicago Public Schools who dedicated his career to fostering collaboration between international business, language education, and international studies.
In 2024, the Board of Directors voted to change the name of the award in order to broaden the scope of possible recipients, recognizing a diverse array of policymakers, public servants, business leaders, and education advocates who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public service in the realm of language and cultural education.
Recipients of this award have championed initiatives that bridge cultural divides, promote multilingualism, and enhance the global competence of communities. Through their efforts, they have influenced policy, inspired educational reform, and empowered individuals to engage with the world in a more meaningful and culturally aware manner. This recognition is a testament to the profound impact that public service can have in shaping a more inclusive and connected world.
The annual recipient(s) of this award are decided by the ACTFL Board of Directors.
